I own a 2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited (H4 - 2.5L), and she was going okay all the way up until about a few weeks ago.
I'll admit that I'm a terrible car owner, and when I was in the process of shopping and getting my car, my dad was with me for a lot of it so I assumed he'd teach me about the maintenance and care for the car. However, my dad is busy and I don't live with him, so I never got those lessons. (This isn't to say it's not my responsibilty! I know it is) My car was doing fairly good until October, when after driving with the oil light on for over 1500 miles overdue (I was dead broke, and homeless), the car grumbled and displayed the CEL and AT OIL TEMP light. I immediately turned it off not even 3 seconds later, and didn't turn it on until I added oil, which it was completely out of. I'm extremely lucky that my engine didn't seize, and that I had oil in my car already from my ex's car.
I got out of that one alive. However, I discovered a rain water leak in the cabin about 3/4 weeks ago. Water is coming from somewhere and I have no idea where. I'm pretty sure it's the moonroof, but I can't tell for sure. I stuck one of my fingers in the gap below the moonroof glass where the inner mechanisms are, and found water on my fingers. The water is on the passenger side, and soaks a little patch of the ceiling fabric near the passenger handle that's up there, and you can see a clear trail where it drips down the pillar it's connected to and goes into...somewhere.
I had noticed the sound of rushing water in my car after heavy rain had happened in my state, and noticed my speakers weren't playing anything but my head unit would display the song title still. Then my head unit died (black, no response, no Subaru upon car start anymore) a day later. A few days after that, I was out late at night, and I was pulling out backwards, and I felt a weird texture/sensation on the road, like my back tires were locking up or skidding. My traction control light came on and started flashing at me as I tried to drive, and flashed maybe 3-4 times. I stopped the car right away, and the light had gone off. I drove slowly to see if that would affect anything, but the light didn't come on. The person with me asked to drive, and we swapped, and when he hit the gas with a little more force, the traction light flashed 3-4 times again, he says the car provided some form of physical response to him pushing it (he says it grumbled, I think the car did the same traction thing), and this time the ABS light came on along with the BRAKE light. The BRAKE light was flashing, and did not stop flashing the entirety that the car was in that state. The three lights stayed on, and I
I called my dad and he told me to try driving it, as I wasn't at home. We tried to drive it from there, and it drove with no issues. I didn't notice any issues with the brakes, and I got home safe perfectly fine. I turned it on two days later to run an errand, and the lights were gone. They've been gone since, and I haven't encountered that issue since. However, now my speedometer is dead and won't rise at all. The RPMs still display on the left perfectly fine, and the other gauges are all responsive. No other issue.
I don't have a reader for the codes that were displayed, but intend on getting one as soon as I can. I can't take her to the mechanic right away, so every day I drive I worry. She's got 108000 miles, I got her at 89000 last year. I love her and feel really bad about treating her like this, and just want to make sure I won't break her completely by continuing to run her as part of my life. How likely is it I mess something up by driving?
