I was watching Across the Spider-Verse and had a thought. I looked online and didn't see anyone who has a similar theory.
The theory relies on a few things:
- Miles IS an anomaly and doesn't fit in the Spider-Verse. The spider from 42 shouldn't have bitten Miles and caused an anomaloulous Spider-Man in 1610. For sake of clarity, I'm going to refer to him as Anomaly Spider-Man to differentiate from Spider-Man 1610 who died.
- The 'canon events' are not universe specific, but Spider-Man specific.
The theory relies primarily on a line that seems to be glossed over. When Gwen and Miles are talking during the first meeting, Gwen comments:
In every other universe, Gwen Stacy falls for Spider-Man. And in every other universe, it doesn't end well.
To me, this seems to be a huge flag. Spider-Man 1610 is dead. There doesn't seem to be a Gwen 1610. Miles, Anomaly Spider-Man, is falling for Spider-Man 65. To me, Gwen is afraid to fall for Miles based on this idea. She's trying not to get too close, but still has deep emotional feelings. Similarly, Miles sees the phrasing as 'Gwen is afraid that they are going to die if she gets too close'.
I'd like to propose the exact opposite. Miles is the 'Gwen Stacey' for Spider-Man 65. Beyond the Spider-Verse will have Miles die and be the refrigerator for Spider-Man 65. Gwen is the 'true' focus character in the Spider-Verse sequel duology.
There are a number of things I noticed as I watched - including the first lines. I'm going to highlight the important phrases:
Let's do things differently this time. So differently. His name is Miles Morales. He was bitten by a radioactive spider, and he's not the only one. He hasn't always had it easy, and he's not the only one. And now he's on his own, and he's not the only one. You think you know the rest. You don't. I thought knew the rest, but I didn't. I didn't wanna hurt him, but I did. And... he's not the only one.
The viewer THINKS we know how the story will go. Miles is the main character. He isn't.
Gwen THOUGHT that she knew what would happen. She doesn't.
She didn't WANT to fail and cause his death, but does.
Thoughts?
(I also have a theory about tying in Gwen's trans identity, becoming a Spider-Man in Miles place rather than Spider-Gwen or Spider-Woman, but that's a different post. :) )
