Depending on the adventure you run, you're bound to interact with variety of groups, both heroic and less so. And those groups will probably form opinions of you based on those interactions.
In my game I plan to use this Mutant Reputations chart (p. 132) to track my group's standing among the various factions that they encounter. I will likely add a tier higher and lower, extending the ego check bonus to triple edge/trouble with ranks of Liked/Beloved/Revered and oppositely, Feared/Hated/Despised.
How will I track growth in reputation?
- Through Favors and Disfavors (I really struggled coming up with good terms for these). Much like Edges and Troubles, these are gained through actions that either help or hinder the goals of a particular faction. Let's say you help the X-men thwart the Brotherhoods attempt to hold a group of humans hostage. You might gain a Favor with the X-men while Also gaining a Disfavor with the Brotherhood.
How will I measure when a reputation change happens?
- Let's look at positive reputation and apply the same format to negative reputation. I am currently looking at requiring 3, 4, and 5 Favors respectively to move up each reputation level. So if I am Neutral with the Avengers, it would take 3 Favors to become Liked, then 4 more Favors to become Beloved, and 5 more from there to Revered. The same applies for Disfavors and Negative reputation. Also think of reputation as a spectrum.. let's say you are Beloved by the Guardians of the Galaxy, but betray them and keep a powerful artifact you worked together to gain for yourself.. This may not be enough to make you Feared, but it could be enough to drop you from Beloved to Liked.
Final Thoughts
Perhaps a Narrator can set additional rewards/outcomes for reaching particular reputation outcomes, such as needing to be Beloved to formally join the team, or Revered to gain access to team-specific mega resources such as Cerebro, or Stark's HELIOS Laser. Negative reputation will likely dictate Aggro, being Hated by a group might cause them to plan specific countermeasures for your hero, while being Despised might give you a new Nemesis to deal with.
Also scale this for what works best in your campaign. While it could be possible in my universe to gain multiple favors throughout a single adventure, maybe folks are less trusting in your universe and it takes bigger happenings to earn Favors and Disfavors. My biggest hope is that someone aside from me finds this useful.
EXCELSIOR!
