Where to start with Spiderman and Carol Danvers?

I've only really read DC in the past, and I'm looking to get into Marvel comics as well, specifically with the two I mentioned above...

But I'm not really sure where to start with all of it, I prefer collecting trades. Is there a trail I can follow from the past few years to get up to date, or is it just a case of reading the big events that happened over the years.

Also my favourite DC character is Batgirl/Barbra Gordon... Is there a character from Marvel's side that's similar? (Or just a character with great writing on their inner monologues.)

Any help and recommendations would be appreciated.
