Basically, the movie got memed on so hard and so few people actually watched it that nobody knows how good or bad it actually is. Which seems intentional. Since people would jokingly make up dialogue that didn't exist in the film. Or scenes that weren't actually in the movie. After having watched it tonight in an effort to catch up on the venom franchise before the 3rd film releases later this year, I must say it is a mixed bag.
For one, it felt like an actual movie. As in the world it presented felt real and tangible, unlike the modern MCU and DC films that feel like they take place in a plastic and cartoony world that you can't grab onto. So I appreciated that aspect of the film. Secondly, there were a good number of cool and neat parts in the movie. Enough of them to warrant the movies existence. I particularly liked the confrontations between morbius and milo and the counterfeiters / drug manufacturers. The two men's personal battles against each other were believable and had weight to them. And their lonh history as friends was presented well.
The movie had some dumb and stupid parts, too. While some of the action scenes were cool and neat, others were strange and full on WTF. Particularly the first and final action scenes when morbius battles the sea crew and the final battle with milo. But even in the weird action scenes there were brief moments that were kind of cool. Notably the slow motion bits that were oddly awesome.
Like I said, there are enough cool and entertaining moments to counter the stupid moments. The film is not terrible but it's not great, either. It's enjoyable. it's certainly more enjoyable than some of the other recent comic book movies and shows that have released. For all of the faults of the venom franchise, the filmmakers know how to make these films enjoyable at best and so-bad-its-good at worst. Think: with each new entry, every film goes viral and grabs the attention of pop culture. For better or worse, people talked about venom, they talked about morbius, they talked about madame web. And that says something.
On a final note, the morbius meme culture is so fanatical, widespread, and entrenched online that any reply this post gets will probably be a tongue in cheek quip about the film. 2 years after its release, the memes around the movie continue to exist, which also says something about the influence of the film on internet culture.
