Many years later, when he faced the firing squad, u/BBD131 would remember the day he met her on an online forum. She was in her 30s or 40s (one never knows for sure, maybe a mature 25 year old? Perhaps she's in her 50s and up for a challenge?) and in a passionless marriage, just like himself. That passion was what he found so irresistible. He had learned that passionate people are always the most interesting, be it a passion for soil science, human sexuality, or magical realism. It didn't matter, because passion makes big, yellow butterflies dance around a woman. She shared her passion with him, and they grew close, exchanging messages and photographs, and complaints about the weather.
She was always a secret, because he had learned the magic of secrets. Secrets make the whole thing so much more exciting. So he shared secrets with her, things he hadn't told anyone, including his wife. And she trusted him with secrets of her own, which he guarded with the vigor of a Disney prince (or perhaps rogue, it's ever so difficult to keep track).
And the story continued, just a sip of spice to warm his soul and distract him from the time he spent between adventures.
