Trivia Levels
Post Body

I've seen a couple different takes on a question/answer level and I wanted to streamline the structure, so I came up with this simple layout for a trivia level. Feel free to use this layout in your own levels, or improve upon it as you see fit.

Here's the layout for a single question: Example Trivia Level layout.

It might be easier to understand how it works just by trying it. The ID for my Mario Trivia! level is 0E6A-0000-005D-94E0

The idea is that the left side of the screen presents a question in a Miiverse post, and the right side has a series of pipes each with a corresponding answer in a Miiverse post. One of the pipes leads to the start of the next question in the subworld, and the rest do nothing. This layout is ultimately repeated for every question in the main world and subworld, which cycle you between main and sub each time. The mushroom platform on the left and gray blocks on the right are for standing on while posting the Miiverse comments, to ensure the comments are neatly spaced and aligned.

Some question/answer levels I've played would waste doors or pipe on wrong answers that drop the player on instant-death traps. Killing the player doesn't really make sense in a quiz level because forcing the player to re-answer questions they've already answered takes little thought or skill. Moreover, using pipes on wrong answers reduces the number of questions you can fit in a level. It's much better to save transition pipes only for the correct answers.

Pipes are really great for question/answer setups because the player can't tell which pipe is the correct one just by looking at it, and even if the player runs up to one of the wrong pipes it doesn't allow them to deduce which of the remaining pipes is correct. Plus, decorative pipes are practically unlimited. I arbitrarily chose 3 pipes per question. You could easily fit 4 by making the walkways 1 block shorter. With some juggling of the layout, you could fit even more.

You are limited to 10 main world/subworld transition pipe pairs, so that limits a trivia level to 10 questions. I managed to squeeze 11 in by using a different layout for the last question where only the right answer goes directly to the goal. Limiting it to 10 questions to keep the structure consistent may have been a better call, but I liked all 11 of my questions and didn't want to cut any.

I also added sound effects in front of each pipe to indicate if the player guessed correctly or not. Screenshot The player could figure it out pretty easily based on if they do/don't transition through the pipe, but I thought the audio cue offered good immediate feedback. You can also see I put a sound effect on Mario. It causes the SMW special stage music to play throughout the entire level, which I thought was appropriate because it sounds like game show music.

Another simple but effective detail. The entire level is only one screen tall, which prevents the screen from scrolling vertically. This keeps all the text boxes on screen at all times.

Thankfully, Miiverse posting restrictions do not apply in Mario Maker. I was able to post 45 comments to my trivia level in a span of 10-15 minutes (basically, as fast as I could type them) and never encountered any posting restrictions.

I hope that gives some good inspiration to the rest of you. Again, anyone is welcome to use or modify the layout for your own levels. I look forward to seeing what other people can come up with.
