Thanks to u/Embarrassed-Jury7116, Uncle JJ now has a visual form! (Subject to change as I do more refinement with the AI with the help of friends~) In their own words "You're like a cryptid!" Maybe now y'all can get some idea of why I keep breaking out of the basement 🤣
Onto the fish for the day! In this case, it's an entire genus~ Argonauta consists of a handful of different species of octopus. They're all commonly known as argonauts or paper nautili. They're only very distantly related to the nautilus of old, so that last name doesn't really work for much more than just their looks. And why do they look like that? Because those are females! Female argonauts grow several times larger than the males and will live for much longer than them as well. On top of that, they've go special tentacles~ See, males die immediately after mating for the first time, but females will go on to breed several times throughout their life. Those special tentacles allow them to make a very thin shell. The shell is actually a reusable egg case! They'll scoop up a small amount of air into the shell to provide buoyancy, deposit their eggs inside, and then back into the opening to defend and provide for the eggs until they hatch. Once hatched, they just fill the shell back up with eggs and repeat the process~
