American is our nationality. Then there’s also ethnicity and race. Many immigrants to America settled in tight knit communities of people from their home countries & kept a lot of their traditions and, in some cases, even their language. Also, a lot of Americans have relatives who immigrated relatively recently (for example, my great grandfather immigrated from Italy. He was alive when I was a kid & brought his family traditions which we keep up with, even today. My kids’ grandfather immigrated from Spain in the 80s. He’s still alive. Etc.) Furthermore, the US is hella diverse, so almost everyone’s family has a different ethnic composition. So we do identify as American, but we also recognize where our relatives came from.
