New to Mao. Does AP Maokai work in top?

So, I was also Mao-curious from ARAM games, and when I saw Support Maokai become a thing I decided to try him out. I'm in love with his tankyness and the build path diversity.
What I've been wondering, because I've also been considering playing more top, is how well that flexibility carries over?
All the guides I'm seeing are saying to run Sunfire/Full Tank in top. But, how good is Liandries/Mandate Demon Helm Comet in top? I tried a few games and it worked okay. Is there a reason no one else does it?
