Rule clarification on range and items

My friends and I played this past weekend and we ran into a few scenarios that had us search in the rule book for answers. I believe we figured it out but I want to be 100% sure: First, when resolving Horror checks, "within range" means 3 spaces even if the investigatior isn't within line of sight? Second, if you're forced to drop an item due to some effect, does it take an action to pick them back up?
