This was actually one of the first series of manga I (35M) ever collected back when I was in my last year of high school almost 19 years ago. My then girlfriend at the time said it might be a series I could like, and she ended up being quite right. Sad thing is, no one really knows much about it, especially these days, and you would be hard pressed to find it anywhere outside of eBay.
The anime for this series only covered the first 7 volumes with 13 episodes and an OVA movie (also incredibly hard to come by) and it never went into the next series, the Twilight Tales. If you can get your hands on it or find it anywhere online, I would seriously give it a read
