I posted my first malicious compliance a couple of days ago regarding my compulsory reflective essay. This story concerns the actual work experience itself which occurred around a year later.
The work experience was supposed to be for 4 weeks or 2, depending on hours you worked etc. You had to get a form signed by your 'employer' which was like a timesheet.
As you can see in my previous post I thought these classes were a waste of time.
I went to the work experience coordinator who remembered me from last year (and still probably hated my face) and she said...
"We'll be checking your timesheet very carefully, please make sure that it's all in order... I wouldn't want to fail you".
I just shrugged it off and submitted my work experience request. They checked out the business i had requested to work with and it was all legit so they greenlit it.
The business I was working with was a small one run by my grandfather. I worked there sometimes during the summer for a bit of extra money. It wasn't a huge moneymaker, just enough to keep my grandad busy and to make him some pocket money. They called him to confirm he was the owner and that he was willing to let me do work experience etc etc. He agreed.
I turn up at his business when my experience is due to start, my grandad is stood there and the conversation goes ...
G: why are you here ?
D: my work experience grandad ?
G: yeah... but you know what to do here and I only really need help during summer. I have salaried people to do the work they want you to do for free.
D: so what do you want me to do ?
G: don't waste your time here. I'll sign your timesheet, use it to study or something.
So I happily go on my way and spend a month playing Xbox, reading and doing essays.
When our work experience class meets up a month or so later, we all have our results back and I've passed the class (and well). As the class file out of the room, the work experience coordinator has this venomous smile on her face and asks me if "the work experience was so tough". I start laughing and she can't understand why, her smile falters.
I tell the work experience coordinator about my work experience and she's apoplectic with rage. I asked her if my timesheet was all in order and her face just blanched as she put two and two together. I have a signed timesheet as she stipulated and a business owner who will confirm he signed the timesheet, all my paperwork was in order and I know the business well enough to describe my duties.
She ended up leaving the college six months later because apparently I wasn't the only one who found this loophole out and it got out amongst academic staff.
TLDR; work experience coordinator was "keeping close eye" on my paperwork. my grandad told me work experience with him was basically a waste of time and signed everything off so I wouldn't get in trouble.
