I had about 750 Ulta points from my high-point of shopping. I'm still paying that credit card. It is more money than my current car note is worth, for reference, and my car loan was a 5-year.
I saw someone posting in the MUA on the cheap subreddit about promos for Ulta and I thought I'd check and see what sort of promos they have. I have very damaged hair and I use a LOT of leave-in conditioner to bring it 'back to life' so to speak, so I thought if I had the bonus offer of 40-50% off hair care products I might buy some to stock up (my hair is middle of my back and thick, so I use a lot of product and don't feel bad about having 4 extra bottles of leave-in for every place I could possibly ever need to use it. xD)..
I logged into my account and there it was, 757 points gone as of April this year.
I haven't been buying makeup in stores for so long. Sure, once in a while I'll grab a chapstick or something if I find a nice lipstick or an eyeliner. I even allow myself to buy something if I have a date, or an event, or whatever. If I need something, I should be able to buy that thing and I let myself have that. So I was going to let myself spend those points.
But they're not there anymore. And at first I was like 'WTH!?!?!'.. But I don't even know that I really care? Yes, I spent money to 'earn' those points. But they're not even a fraction of how much I had to spend to GET the points. So it doesn't matter if they're gone, since they were never money to begin with, and I was just sucked into the consumerism of makeup and the beauty industry, sucked into buying things to feel happier, sucked into thinking I was getting a 'good deal' if my points were 4x stacked, etc.
It's not a good deal. You're always spending way more than you receive in return. And I'll be alright without that like $50 worth of products I didn't need to begin with. When I run out of leave-in conditioner, I'll buy a new one. But today isn't that day. And I'm not even really sad about those points, to be honest.
