I think this month has been one of the most impactful in terms of coming to terms with how much damage we are inflicting on our planet i.e. Earth Day and the many recent studies that have shown that our time is ticking to save our home and the animals (and ourselves, of course.)
TWELVE YEARS. That’s how much time we have. And the way things are going, makeup companies and the beauty community need to GET. THEIR. SHIT. TOGETHER.
The way the community regards makeup is heartbreaking. The way they clamour for the same damn product over and over again. But oh no!! It’s a different formula!! From a different brand!!! And OOOOH, this one smells like vanilla and the packaging is so cute!!!
Mass production of products in itself is a huge issue. All that plastic, all that packaging. And for what? So we use it for a few months and throw it away, only to buy some more that will eventually also end up in landfill, or in our beautiful oceans.
Makeup culture has become so toxic that we think nothing of all the boxes, and the plastic covers, and the disgraceful DOUBLE packaging that a lot of brands, for whatever reason, feel the need to apply. We mindlessly purchase and purchase and purchase because “that’s what’s trendy!” “All these youtubers are raving about it!” “I don’t need it but it’s on sale so why not?” When the regret of impulse kicks in, or we lose interest, it becomes another piece of garbage that further speeds up the destruction of our planet.
We NEED to take a stand. We NEED to let these companies know that we prioritise our planet over profits. We NEED to educate our friends and beauty lovers on the dangers that excessive makeup culture and consumerism has.
Imagine if everyone pertained to buying only what they REALLY needed and wanted, rather than everything in every colour and formula in the fear of missing out. If companies used sustainable, eco-friendly and recyclable packaging that limited waste, and if products didn’t contain harmful chemicals that contribute to pollution.
I’m sorry if this is long-winded. But as a teenage girl living on this earth, I am no longer going to idly watch as my home, a home I have barely experienced in the grand scheme of things, is destroyed. We are so much better than this. At this point, we have to be. We, as consumers, have so much power.
So please. Do your bit and educate. Research. And VOTE WITH YOUR DOLLAR. You are so much powerful than you know. Our Mother Earth has given us so much. And it’s time we show her we love her just as much she loves us.
Peace, love, power and kindness to all of you 💖
