Dermacol vs. L'Oreal True Match: Lightest Shades (and my thoughts so far)
Post Body

First of all, i have to apologize for posting so much here - especially about Dermacol. Hope you guys aren't sick of me yet. :)

So I took the amazing, life-giving, awesome advice from /u/SpaceTortoise and ordered from PinkBox7. My four concerns were legitimacy of the product, color match, coverage, and endurance.

Well, the product arrived in 11 days! Couldn't believe that. So I opened it and verified all the "check points" to make sure I have the real Dermacol product. Everything checks out. That's one fear squashed.

Now onto the color match. I normally wear L'Oreal True Match in n1, even though it's about a shade too dark. It's passable, but it still bothers me. But I can't afford inclusive brands like Illamasqua and Fenty right now. So I was doing the best I could.

I took a photo of my Dermacol and L'Oreal True Match shades for a comparison. Dermacol in 208 is on the left, and L'Oreal True Match in n1 is on the right. It looks like Dermacol could in fact be about a shade lighter than my L'Oreal True Match, and I cannot wait to try it out.

Now that leaves me with coverage and endurance.

As far as coverage is concerned, I almost can't have too much coverage. I don't like having visible pores, weird texture, or any discoloration showing at all. I like being airbrushed and "made up." I also have a chronic illness, and I don't want to look how I feel.

Anyway, with every other foundation I've tried, I've always had to blend foundation in small sections until my whole face is done, then repeat with concealer. This is so I can maximize coverage without globbing it on. It looks good, but it takes forever. I am hoping Dermacol will let me skip a separate concealer altogether, and that would be LIFE CHANGING if it did.

As far as endurance goes, I know that no makeup will ever be bulletproof, but I am hoping I can keep it looking nice during longer days and/or nights with setting sprays and powders.

I watched tons of YouTube demos using Dermacol, and some loved it while others hated it. Based on the reviews I saw, I feel like the people who didn't like Dermacol may have struggled with it for one of three reasons:

  • They got a counterfeit product. The fake products are really tough to spot, and they look almost identical. It happens to the best of us!
  • They apply it the same way they would any "standard" foundation. Because Dermacol is such high coverage, the product is thicker and goes further. It can get messy quickly, so it helps to be careful when you apply.
  • They weren't prepared for the intense formulation. It's quite a bit thicker and more matte than most foundations, so the end result is not going to look or apply like your standard liquid foundation.

Those were the main problems I saw when people tried it in YouTube videos. I'm not accusing anyone of anything, and I'm not blaming anything on anyone. I made the suggestions in the hopes that people - if interested - might get the most out of their Dermacol Makeup Cover foundation.

If this product meets all my very rigid standards, it will be my holy grail foundation. I hope PinkBox7 never stops selling it!

Edit #1: Apparently, some people felt that the wording in the paragraphs where I discuss YouTube demos were accusatory. That is not what I was going for AT ALL. I was trying to offer (hopefully) helpful suggestions to those that might want them so that people can get the most out of their Dermacol. I also wasn't trying to make this my official "review." I am aware that when I wrote this, I hadn't actually tried it yet. That's why I tried to word it the way I did. It honestly sadddens me that some people reacted the way they did. People are entitled to their comments, but some of the responses took away from this otherwise very happy experience, and that hurts me. Nonetheless, I have edited the offending portion of my post so that it (hopefully) more accurately conveys my original message.

Edit #2: I have officially tried my Dermacol. We are going to break this down into four categories: legitimacy of the product, color match, coverage, and endurance.

LEGITIMACY: As mentioned above, Reddit pointed me in the right direction. I felt confident with my purchase, but as soon as it arrived, I went through the checklist again to make sure everything was good. Everything checked out just fine.

COLOR MATCH: The color match is outstanding. At least in my opinion, it doesn't look too yellow or too pink/orange on me. And for the first time in years, my makeup is actually light enough! That was really exciting for me.

COVERAGE: For this reason alone, I am very glad I bought it. Thanks to medical problems beyond my control, I had cystic acne for 12 years, and now I have scarring from it. This stuff covers like a DREAM. And my old method took over an hour. I was finished with skin makeup in TWENTY minutes. And for the first time in 15 years, I left the house without a single stitch of concealer anywhere on my face. And I was finally able to buy it for myself. It was my own personal little moment of happiness. So the coverage is life-changing.

ENDURANCE: This is always a big deal for me. I like my makeup to stay put, because I need that coverage to stay where I put it. I need that coverage - period. I had a busy day today, so it was the perfect time to test it out. I had Dermacol on for a total of about 12 hours. To prep my skin, I cleaned my skin with a Stridex pad first, then applied the Dermacol. For me personally, moisturizer and primer have never really helped the makeup application process, and can even hinder it, so I only moisturize before bed. I worked in sections, applying very small amounts at a time until I achieved total coverage. I set it with loose powder. That gave me the chance to see how it held up without any "extra" tools and tricks so to speak.

After about 4 hours of wear, I felt a slight itch, and my fingers just barely grazed my skin in a half-hearted attempt to scratch the itch. When I looked at my fingers, some of the foundation had come off. That happened several other times throughout the day. It felt like wind would even rub it off. By the time the 12 hours was up, bare skin was just starting to peek through in a few small faded areas. Endurance is definitely not a strong point for Dermacol. But I still don't think it's a bad product overall. I'm going to try adding a setting spray. Overall, I still like it because it will save me TONS of time and even some money, too. I just can't touch my face, which I don't do anyway. It would work fine for everyday wear, but for longer and/or sweatier days, my old method would be better. We'll see what happens when I try a setting spray.

For those of you who ready this entire thing, thank you. And to those of you understood what I was trying to say, thank you as well.
