In Maine, is it safer to take the interstate during snow or the backroads/sideroads?

Post Body

In Virginia (where I’m from), the plows and salt trucks usually hit the interstate first, but I don’t know if it’s the same here, due to how used to the snow people are.

In general, I say interstate, especially in a particularly bad storm. My thought process is two-fold; the interstate is constantly being plowed cleared; even the main roads aren’t constantly attended. But also, if you run out of the road or have an accident and need help, it might be a very long time before someone comes along on a secondary road in a bad storm. On the interstate, there will always be help passing by soon, even if it’s the plow truck itself. That thought comforts me.
