Fuzhou Mahjong Rules (Corrected)
Post Body

Rules accumulated and translated from multiple Chinese sources. Reposted because the original post, unfortunately, had a few mistranslated and just plain wrong rules.

144 tiles are used - all suits, honors, and 8 flowers. Winds and Red Dragons are also treated as flowers in standard Chinese Mahjong variants, i.e. they are instantly melded and replaced.

Calls of chi, pon, and kan are allowed in the game.

Hands are the size used in Taiwanese Mahjong: 16 tiles, winning hand is 17 - 5 sets and a pair.

Once everyone has 16 tiles, they meld any flowers they have and redraw until everyone has no more flower tiles in their hand.

Flip over the last tile from the dead wall and place it on top of the ninth stack from the back end of the wall - this is called "opening the gold", and the tile showing indicates what the "gold" tile is for this round. The three other tiles matching the tile on the wall are also gold tiles - they're not only worth points if you have them in a winning hand, but they also count as jokers or wilds in a winning hand as well, albeit you can't use them as wilds in calls of chi, pon, or kan.

The gold tile marks where the live wall ends and the dead wall begins. Flower and kan replacements are taken from the dead wall, as usual - if the number of stacks in the dead wall changes, shift the position of the gold tile accordingly so it stays on the ninth stack of tiles from the tail end of the wall.

If you can make a winning hand before your first discard of the hand by drawing the gold tile from on top of the dead wall, then doing so is called "Robbing the Gold" and wins you the hand. If both the dealer and a non-dealer can rob the gold, then the non-dealer takes it. If multiple non-dealers can rob the gold, then the one sitting closest to the dealer's right takes it.

If you ever have three gold tiles in your hand at the same time, you win the hand (Golden Dragon). If your winning hand has two golds for its pair, then it's called a "Golden Pair".

If dealer wins a hand, they stay the dealer. If a non-dealer wins a hand and the dealer has won consecutive times, the dealer pays the winner a penalty equal to their number of consecutive wins times two.

SCORING:

  • Base Points: Varies based on house rules, but usually is 1.
  • Flower Points: The value of each melded flower is the same as base points.
  • Gold: The value of each gold tile in the winning hand is the same as base points.
  • In a winning hand, an open kan is worth one flower; a concealed kan is worth two flowers; if you have four flowers of the same set (i.e. four Easts, four Red Dragons, all four Season tiles) then that set is worth 6 flowers.
  • If you win on someone else's discard, then the person whose discard you won on pays you double the points of your calculated score; everyone else pays you your calculated score. If you win on a self-draw (tsumo) then everyone else pays you double your calculated score.

For non-special winning hands, the payout from each other player is as follows:

  • Base points Flower Points Gold Points
  • If you won by tsumo, multiply this result by two.

The following special hands are calculated as follows:

  • Pinhu (No pons (triplets) or kans (quads), just 5 chis (sequences of 3) and a pair): Base points times 10, flower and gold points calculated as if win by tsumo and added.
  • Golden Pair: Base points times 20, flower and gold points calculated as if win by tsumo and added.
  • Golden Dragon: Base points times 30, flower and gold points calculated as if win by tsumo and added.
  • Robbing the Gold: Base points times 40, flower and gold points calculated as if win by tsumo and added.
  • Blessing of Heaven/Heavenly Hand (Dealer gets dealt a winning hand on the first draw): Base points times 50, flower and gold points calculated as if win by tsumo and added.

That should be all you need to know to play Fuzhou Mahjong! This seems to be an easy variant for people new to the world of Mahjong to be able to pick up and play.
