As a British viewer, I just feel the need to say that no not all of us over here take the royal family seriously. Some of us, probably a larger population than would expressively admit, think the idea of having a royal family in a 21st century democracy is embarrassing and insulting. I'm surprised Bill didn't say anything on the matter since I know he finds it silly too. The idea that we have to address someone as "majesty" and that our elected politicians, armed service, and leaders of commonwealth nations all have to swear to serve and preserve the royal family is just appalling. I find it so cringey the world has to see all this footage of hysterics crying and laying flowers just as they did with Diana. This is not the majority of us. So please know that.
The press and BBC in particularly would have you think that they represent the entire nation's sentiments towards them. There is a total ban on debating the existence of the monarchy, in fact its even law that a referendum is illegal and part of the treason act should an elected politician bring it up in parliament.
