Protection, Blocking and Trample Interaction?

Hello!

Unfortunately I do not have screenshot of the situation but I will try my best to explain. I had a Lorescale Coatl on the field with 10 Counters so it was a 12/12. I had Garruks Up Rising on the Field. The opponent had a StoneCoil Serpent that was 2/2. I declared Lorescale as an attacked. The Opponent blocked with Stonecoil.

I thought the interaction would be as follows. Stonecoil takes no damage and all 12 damage tramples over? But somehow Stonecoil serpent died and I died 10 damage to the opponent. Is there a rule about protection and blocking that I am missing?
