How do the turn orders work?

I just played a game where my opponent played a "Jace Mind Sculptor ", however after he played it as I wanted to play a "get lost", the game displayed "opponents turn"... (I had 3 white mana available) I thought since "get lost" is an instant, I would've had a chance to play it? Or am I missing something.
