Anyone else a bit disappointed at how the MagSafe market turned out?

Post Body

When MagSafe launched I thought it was a good idea, it’s obviously a Plan B after AirPower fell through, rather than being able to place the iPhone anywhere on the pad, the puck removes the precision in the opposite way of being attracted to your phone and vice versa.

The first party accessories are cool, the charging puck or MagSafe Duo are nice, I wish the puck had a longer cable but I understand this may be an issue with the DC current not being strong enough over longer cables I don’t know. I’ve had a wallet since the FindMy one came out, the battery pack is great that we can see it’s charge on the iPhone’s display, and reverse charge it, it’s a shame they haven’t updated it yet with USB-C. It’s a bit gimmicky that the Apple cases had the colour flash up on the display, but it’s nice to have for aesthetics, would have been fun if you could link them to focus modes or automations.

There’s some really cool stuff that’s MagSafe Compatible, I’ve got a little stand up, pull out ring thing from Anker I use when cooking or FaceTiming, a MagSafe to 1/4-20 UNC Adapter that allows the phone to me mounted to a camera tripod, and a vent mount to easily have my phone mounted easily whilst driving.

I’ve also tested a few different battery packs and to be honest none of them tickle my fancy like the Apple one, just the one ability to see the charge on the display is great and what MagSafe is all about! It would be great if all the above mentioned items produced some sort of visual effect on the screen when connected, then also giving the option the set automations when devices are connected, that would be great!

I’m dissatisfied at the fact you can go to Amazon, type in MagSafe, and almost all the accessories that come up are just magnetic and don’t offer any actual MagSafe functionality. The charging cables and stands therefore only go up to 7.5W and that’s just a step backwards for charging, compared to my Belkin 3-in1, which I can reliably use as a ā€œI’m going out soon, need to charge my phoneā€ charger, I actively avoid the 7.5W chargers in my house for this reason, plus you don’t get the cool circular charging animation and sound (petty but still, it’s cool).

I understand the manufacturer has to pay royalties, but they did for MFi Lightning cables, and then you can, more often than not, guarantee a certain level of quality and reliability, I’m not saying these products are of low quality, Anker offer some pretty solid power banks that I’ve bought for me and my house mates.

Hopefully we’re still fledgling times and this is just the beginning, now Apple have released the spec and future Androids have the potential to adopt MagSafe, there will be a burst of properly speced products that offer full MagSafe functionality
