There’s something that’s been bothering me for some time. In the Donnie Brasco book, there’s a passage where Lefty tells to Donnie that nobody supported Sonny Black’s family when he was in the can and Lefty did. Apparently, no one else was willing to help and Sonny was cut loose. Why was Sonny treated like that, when he was apparently a well liked and respected member? Or was Lefty over exaggerating/misinterpreting/lying? Or does it imply that the mob, as usual, didn’t care and Lefty did, cause they were friends? Thanks in advance
This is an excerpt from Wiseguy
““As far as Henry was concerned, Karen just couldn’t understand that when a wiseguy went away he stopped earning. It was a fact. All bets and all debts were off. No matter what it said in the movies, a wiseguy’s friends, former partners, debtors, and ex-victims whined, lied, cheated, and hid rather than pay money owed to a man behind bars, much less to his wife. If you wanted to survive prison you had to learn how to earn money on the inside.”
The short answer is that these guys are more greedy than they are loyal.
