I remember being so excited for her new album, especially after Music. Without a second thought, I bought the special edition release. I remember the controversy for the American Life video, and I remember the mini Cooper promo toys (I wanted one so badly!).
I attended that X-Static expo here in NYC and I thought it was so cool. It wasn’t super crowded when I was there, which I was surprised about. I regret not buying the book. A friend of mine got a free one when there was an autograph signing at Tower Records in Manhattan, and Madonna didn’t stay long enough for everyone. I thought it was a cool move to send a free book as a gift to make up for it.
I remember watching the Making Of the Hollywood video, I’m not sure why it stays so present in my mind. Nobody Knows Me became my favorite instantly, especially because I was expecting some dance music after the Music Album.
The American Life remixes were all over the clubs in NYC. I don’t remember the Hollywood remixes being played much, but Nobody Knows Me was another club favorite.
Does anyone remember the CDs they were giving out at the GAP? A friend of mine worked there and I still have SO many of them. I also have some promo remixes of American Life with Missy Elliot, though I’m not sure where I got them. I feel like they were given to me at a club.
I wasn’t shocked with the famous kiss with Britney and Christina. I was watching the rebroadcast right after the original because I missed it, and a friend of mine called me to tell me what happened.
While I did not like American Life much when it was released, now it’s definitely in my top 3 Madonna albums. Such a great album.
