Bad Defense

Why is my defense so bad when I don't play them? In superstar mode, my defense is always the worse. Like 32 in passing and 10thish in running. Every time. I've started/played with 4 teams and it's the same every time. Why? And I always seem to go for it on 4th down when I'm inside the 30, instead of going for a field goal. Every damn time. I've kicked field goals on 3rd down just so my kicker gets to kick
