Why buy instead of build?
Post Body

So, in 3D printers, it’s becoming common to buy a printer or two, then print further printers.

Obviously you buy some parts and such, but you can start printing more and more new 3D printers as you collect them.

Why don’t machinists make machines? Obviously there is a huge complexity difference here, but a screw is a screw, and a stepper is a stepper.

I got suggested this community from a TofCNC post, and it was saying it’s a showroom for super expensive machines. Which made me wonder, why don’t shops just make machines with their machines?

Obviously I’m over simplifying things. But if you’re a shop making 50% of the same parts all night and day because businesses need parts, seems like any of your regular jobs would be good candidates for building specialized machines for. Then you can free up your more general purpose machines for custom/contract work.

It’s also entirely possible you all do this in some capacity already I’m just watching the wrong YT channels too of course.
