Ways to teach apprentices respect for the power of a lathe and mill

Post Body

I have some apprentices and they don’t seem to respect what the machines can do to the human body. An example is trying to slow down the jacobs chuck with their hand just after turning off the mill. One hand on the brake and the other on the chuck.

As soon as I seen him do it I sternly told him that’s a no go.

Tried the videos of people being sucked up into lathes and turned into mist, but they seemed unaffected. Desensitised almost.

Apart from strapping a whole slab of meat to the spindle, have you guys got any tips?

Can’t reply to you all. Thank you ladies and gents for the overwhelming replies. Had a few laughs from some of the comments in light of the serious nature of the subject. However, The apprentice in question has since been caught doing more super dangerous shit since I posted and has been removed from operation of the mill and any other turning operations. I should have stated that I am merely a tradesman with no authority to fire people, but the insubordination was reported and is above my head now with upper management. I haven’t seen the apprentice since.. That’s a weight off my shoulders, to say the least. Again appreciate the love and advice.
