1501 commercial machine: laser pointer?

My 1501 has a laser pointer mounted on the head well behind the needle block. It's very short and can't be pointed at anything useful, so far as I can see. What is it for?

It’s to help you place the center of your design. You should have an option to trace out the shape of the design on the fabric to make sure you have it aligned correctly. If the laser isn’t pointing at the hole in the needle plate currently it may have gotten bumped out of place, you likely just need to move it back into position.
