For those of you who have embroidered for a long time, what is your stabilizer strategy? How do you determine which one to use? Do you use the same one (or few) for all your projects? What brands do you like best? Do you think there could be better stabilizers than what's on the market right now? I would like to hear any and all thoughts stabilizer. I don't need a lesson on what it is, I'd just like to hear about everyone's opinions and strategy on stabilizers and toppers.. Thanks!
Honestly the best way to figure it out is just practice. Trying different things on different fabrics and see what works best. Most of it boils down to more stable fabrics need less stability, and less stable fabrics need more. Once you understand the differences of various fabrics, there isn’t so much guesswork. Then factor in other things that will impact it like will it be washed? Will the fabric stretch when worn? Will the other side be visible?
I don’t know that there’s much to be improved on in terms of stabilizers, I’m sure there always room for innovation, but I think there’s plenty of options on the market right now, you just have to find what you like.
I buy the majority of my stabilizers from Gunold (just ordered about $600 worth yesterday 🤢 which mostly lasts me about 6 months). I go through more black cutaway than anything else, second in line is cap backing then white cutaway and tearaway. I do use a lot of water soluble (both the super heavy kind for patches, and the lighter stuff because I sew a good amount of plush fabrics). I keep two kinds of no-show mesh on hand for different uses but they’re my least used stabilizers.
