Hold down Cmd ... press Tab to open the 'switcher' (not exactly sure what it is officially called) ... keep holding Cmd down ... press Tab again you can move forwards (and backwards with shift too) ... letting go of Cmd will bring the highlighted app to the front ... I always knew that ... but if you press Q instead (so creating a Cmd Q chord) then the highlighted app on the switcher will be quit moving on to the next one (only moving right though) ... a quick way to close down a few apps you don't want around anymore.
Found this out by missing Tab with my finger and pressing Q by mistake and observing what happened.
