My 2013 Mac desktop is slow as hell and I’m dumb at computers

My desktop is PAINFULLY slow. Over the summer I backed everything up and followed directions for a clean install. Still painfully slow.
I’m broke and really hoping I don’t need to buy a new one. I mainly use my desktop for using the internet and photo editing in Lightroom and Photoshop.
Is there anything I can do to help speed this up? Side note: I have no idea what hhd or ssd or intel super quad core processing means. Looking up troubleshooting online is really frustrating.
