Heyo MUD folks,
tldr; looking for a game with cool mechanics, RP, and being newbie friendly when it comes to skills/stats/etc that lets you respec if that'd be necessary.
So I'm coming back to playing things, and want to dig back in to something. So, I'll throw up my wish list here, in order of most to least importance, and we'll see what shakes out. Who knows, I might even start casting again, and talk about your game! (Not that I want special treatment, or any garbage like that. That's dumb, and for losers.)
1) No pay to win/microtransaction fuckery: I'm quite happy to donate money to games to help with their operating costs. Or to just toss the devs a cup of coffee/beer/steak. But if you can do that and get ahead in the game, then it's not the game for me. I do make the exception for cosmetic, non-mechanical impacting things.
2) Cool/Fun/In-depth Mechanics: Gimme a reason to play the game. Gimme a reason to tell friends to play the game. We've all run around Midgaard, we've all watched the screen scroll while pressing a button to send kick on cooldown, we've all equipped our Wis gear to get maximum practices on level. Gimme new. Gimme beefy. Gimme cool magic systems, interactive combat where the mobs are treated like another player. Sure, they programmed/follow logic, but having -all- the skills and debuffs work against them would be cool. Doesn't have to be every mob, either. Clear trash, and the boss or whatever of the zone is your like a player mob. Crafting. Ships (space or seas or sand, up to you!). This is why a MUSH doesn't do it for me. Great RP, but when there's no one around, being able to go level up, find new gear, make gear, build out a town/castle, etc. is fun.
Also, as an addendum to this as it just came to me while typing other things, if your game allows for custom builds since it's based off of another IP (say a game based on Pathfinder rules with stats, feats, skills, etc.) please include a built-in "recommended" build as an option when people level. Be great if said build is newbie friendly, and isn't the outright trash that a lot of games seem to like to stick you with when you use a pre-generated character. If I have to go whip out Pathfinder books in order to build a character that doesn't suck, the game's gonna get a hard pass from me. Especially if I'm bringing friends whose only gaming is the occasional MUD. I don't want to have to hand hold someone EVERY level-up or the like so they don't end up breaking their character.
3) Role-play encouraged and up: Having an environment that likes having its players RP would be nice. It's also nice to have official OOC channels, or the like. I've played IRE games for a loooooooong time, and having to try to communicate "Oh, see, I have reflexes that automatically pick up gold when the monster drops it" is dumb and I hate it. Trying to explain mechanics, IC, often devolves into OOC direct messages/Discord. If it has to go that route, just cut out the middleman.
4) Respeccing, or at least being able to not break your character: A lot of games, once you make a decision on your character, you're locked in. You're either starting a new character, or living with the fact that you're a 20 INT warrior. Having the ability to respec a la any MMO/game with a skill tree would be awesome. I recognize that with great cronch comes great ability to make yourself non-cronchy, and that's fine, but being able to fix that is important.
5) Customizations: I wanna make my character a special, unique snowflake. Emerald and bronze platemail with a two-handed maul chiseled from onyx with veins of jade and a propeller beanie that goes whiiiiirrrrrrr whenever I use an up exit. Not to that level of absurd, but being able to take a piece of equipment and make it really "mine" is always pretty cool. A clothing system is also nifty. Extra bonus points if I get to design my own. And player housing of some sort. I like having my own space to retreat to where I can be afk-ish if I'm working on coding something, netflixing, get pulled away by family, etc.
6) Populace: Honestly, this one isn't a huge deal as far as the amount of people go. I'm an evenings PST player, and have a friend or two I might talk into joining me, but not hopping online and it being just us would be nice. But I recognize how much of a chicken and egg problem this is. Also, ideal if the playerbase isn't a bunch of asshats. You know what I mean.
7) A decent web presence: So many games still have that 1990's website. And it's terrible. Granted, I play MUDs, it's not like I'm a graphics snob. So, if you're going to have that 1990's website, at least have it be a well done one. Useful information, guides that other players have written, a break down of your systems that is publicly accessible information is great. Having your help files accessible by the website? That's worth ten bucks to me right there. Being able to browse help files on my phone during lunch, a break, etc. is nice since I can dig into thingies that take me down a rabbit hole.
I know I'm not going to find a game that fills all of those wants without sitting down and making something myself. Which is about the same as being the person who cooks all the food in the house. Sure, you know it's good, but maaaaaaaan it'd be nice to enjoy someone else's work. Number one is a bit of a throwaway, as that's a hard requirement. But if your game hits three or more of the other points, please feel free to post about it. Or if it hits none of them, go ahead and post that too.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
