I just bought this game, whats the best way to get new cards?

I got just MTGO after my friend who I used to play MTG with moved away, and I now have nobody to play with. I have spent a lot of money on MTG in the past and that was another reason I made the switch, but when I logged in I found that I had 0 cards, not even a started pool of cards, and the store is $3.99 per pack! I could buy a real pack of magic cards for that! I have always heard that MTGO is cheaper so I figure that I'm missing something. Help!
