Tune or no?

Post Body

I just got a custom full system spiral “S” exhaust system with a SC project short can muffler without a tune. Whenever I downshift from high rpms it pops and bangs. I’m kinda concerned if this might harm then engine or will I be good to ride it cause I see split opinions on whether it requires a tune or not. Some say I don’t need a tune if I don’t change the air intake/filters Some say if it pops and bangs it needs a tune cause it’s running lean/rich.

Note: It only pops and bangs if I downshift from high rpms.

A tune will fix the backfiring.

If you intentionally backfire the bike constantly you risk damaging your intake and/or exhaust but it's unlikely.

Switching out your intake for a high flow one then you will lose power and it will require a tune. At that point you've spent money to lose power . Some people will argue that adding a catless exhaust (which your SC exhaust most likely is) will make the bike lose power also but I am not totally convinced this is the case.

It's up to you and it really depends on what you have the cash for. My opinion:

Cheap route: Keep the exhaust on. Don't touch the intake system and avoid backfiring the bike. Fwiw this is my setup on mine and I've had my bike for 3 years and it's never had an issue.

Not so cheap route: Keep the exhaust on, swap out intake for a high flow one and get the bike tuned to get a decent amount of gains in power. If you plan on keeping the bike for a while yet I'd do this.
