Scot parties back federalisation despite plans to siphon money away from Scotland
Post Body

The debate over Holyrood’s future rumbles on. Another press conference claims another victim: This time, the Scottish Green Party felt a turbulent time over their economic policies. Elsewhere, the Scottish Liberal Democrats made clear their support of the federalisation. However, Sky has uncovered that the economic effects of the Federalisation Bill 2017, which was written by the SLD Leader Crazyoc themselves, could be disastrous for Scotland.

Part IV of the Federalisation Bill 2017 states that each region will have a budget which will be either contributed to or siphoned from based on the GVA (gross value added) per capita of the NUTS region. This known as the Regional Redistribution Formula. As Scotland’s GVA is higher than the NUTS regional average (estimates ranging from £200 to £394 higher), it will see money redistributed away from its budget.

This means that Scotland would lose money - and not just small change. Sky analysis estimates Scotland’s losses through the Regional Redistribution Formula at £300m-£700m a year. Despite this, the Scottish Liberal Democrats have today announced that federalisation is one of their ‘three main pillars’. Clearly, the economic consequences of such a decision are ones that must be considered, and with Scotland’s economy already unstable due to the high reliance on oil, even a small drop in funding could be disastrous.

On top of this, the Greens highlighted possible support for a second independence referendum, but there is still a lack of clarity as to whether they support federalisation or independence. The SLD also said they would accept an independence referendum on the right terms. This means the prospect of Scottish independence, and its unknown financial implications, could once again rear its head.

It is ironic perhaps that Crazyoc, the leader of the SLD, was one of the pioneers of the Federalisation Bill. It seems that that very bill could now cost his party valuable seats in Holyrood, much to the chagrin of Liberal Democrat leader demon4372, another advocate of federalisation.

However, the most recent poll from Wellman-Gulls puts the Scottish Conservative and Unionist in the lead with 16.7%. The possible liberal right wing coalition (Scottish Cons, Scottish UKIP, Classical Liberals) stands at 28.4%, opposed to the left wing coalition (Scottish Socialist Party, Scottish National Party, Scottish Green Party) who stand on 43%. However, there is a long way to go yet, and we predict many more twists and turns to this campaign.
