Labourâs Deputy Leader /u/AlmightyWibble used his economics speech last night to explain his partyâs and governmentâs plan to Brexit, amongst other areas. Wibble, who serves as the Governmentâs International Development and Trade Secretary, stated that his party would âseek the liberalisation of tradeâ across the globe following the UKâs decision to âonce again be in control of its own destinyâ.
AlmightyWibble began his speech by referencing the stance that his party would take on Brexit negotiations. He echoed his Leaderâs sentiments by praising the passage of the Doha Development Motion, stating that this would âresolve this blight on the WTOâ, creating a âmassive dividend to many of the poorest communities of the worldâ. In what was the clearest outline of the Labour partyâs plan for post-Brexit trade yet, the MP stated that the Labour Party âshall seek barrier-free access to the Common Marketâ. It is unclear whether this policy is one shared by the entire ABL coalition. Wibble also stated his desire for the UK to sign the North American Free Trade Agreement, to provide a âmassive market for British businessesâ and a âbetter deal for British consumersâ. The partyâs economic spokesperson said that these trade agreements would result in âthe UK becoming a global hub for tradeâ, with âextreme economic benefitsâ to the United Kingdom.
Reflecting on the domestic situation, AlmightyWibble pledged to protect those âwho lose out in this unprecedentedly large act of globalisationâ, telling of a ânew economic order in an economically global Britainâ. Whether this is an indication of an expansion to welfare payments, or an entirely new form of economic protection is yet to be seen. Looking to appease lower income voters, he stated the partyâs promise to âfunnel revenue increases into creating opportunities in deprived areasâ, âcreating an environment where people are able to innovateâ. The details of this community investment are yet to be confirmed, but with a focus on âoffering reskilling to those who desire itâ, it is likely these schemes will come in traditional industrial Labour strongholds. AlmightyWibble also promised âstate entrepreneurial grants and loans, low corporate taxesâ as Labourâs flagship businesses policies.
His speech finished with a warning to politicians, saying that Britain âcan close itself off further from the rest of the world, and turn its back on the benefits of economic integrationâ. With his policies, Wibble claimed that Labour was the party of âopenness, fairness and toleranceâ, and that Labour would âlead Britain into a new age of prosperityâ.
These economic policies are sure to rouse some interest across the British political scene. Promises to lower corporation tax will be welcomed by businesses, but expected following the Brexit vote. Promises of state grants for entrepreneurs might ruffle a few feathers amongst those who seek to see government expenditure lowered, and plans to reinvigorate the community will be anticipated by areas desperately in need. The statement of Labourâs desire to remain in the common market will go some way to appease those who have longed for the Governmentâs Brexit plan to be revealed. However, whether this is Labourâs own general election plan or the ABLâs coalition strategy is as yet unknown.
Sky News will bring you all the rest of the action from the Labour Party conference as it continues.
