Labour Party Conference Day 2: Economics Speech
Post Body

Labour’s Deputy Leader /u/AlmightyWibble used his economics speech last night to explain his party’s and government’s plan to Brexit, amongst other areas. Wibble, who serves as the Government’s International Development and Trade Secretary, stated that his party would “seek the liberalisation of trade” across the globe following the UK’s decision to “once again be in control of its own destiny”.

AlmightyWibble began his speech by referencing the stance that his party would take on Brexit negotiations. He echoed his Leader’s sentiments by praising the passage of the Doha Development Motion, stating that this would “resolve this blight on the WTO”, creating a “massive dividend to many of the poorest communities of the world”. In what was the clearest outline of the Labour party’s plan for post-Brexit trade yet, the MP stated that the Labour Party “shall seek barrier-free access to the Common Market”. It is unclear whether this policy is one shared by the entire ABL coalition. Wibble also stated his desire for the UK to sign the North American Free Trade Agreement, to provide a “massive market for British businesses” and a “better deal for British consumers”. The party’s economic spokesperson said that these trade agreements would result in “the UK becoming a global hub for trade”, with “extreme economic benefits” to the United Kingdom.

Reflecting on the domestic situation, AlmightyWibble pledged to protect those “who lose out in this unprecedentedly large act of globalisation”, telling of a “new economic order in an economically global Britain”. Whether this is an indication of an expansion to welfare payments, or an entirely new form of economic protection is yet to be seen. Looking to appease lower income voters, he stated the party’s promise to “funnel revenue increases into creating opportunities in deprived areas”, “creating an environment where people are able to innovate”. The details of this community investment are yet to be confirmed, but with a focus on “offering reskilling to those who desire it”, it is likely these schemes will come in traditional industrial Labour strongholds. AlmightyWibble also promised “state entrepreneurial grants and loans, low corporate taxes” as Labour’s flagship businesses policies.

His speech finished with a warning to politicians, saying that Britain “can close itself off further from the rest of the world, and turn its back on the benefits of economic integration”. With his policies, Wibble claimed that Labour was the party of “openness, fairness and tolerance”, and that Labour would “lead Britain into a new age of prosperity”.

These economic policies are sure to rouse some interest across the British political scene. Promises to lower corporation tax will be welcomed by businesses, but expected following the Brexit vote. Promises of state grants for entrepreneurs might ruffle a few feathers amongst those who seek to see government expenditure lowered, and plans to reinvigorate the community will be anticipated by areas desperately in need. The statement of Labour’s desire to remain in the common market will go some way to appease those who have longed for the Government’s Brexit plan to be revealed. However, whether this is Labour’s own general election plan or the ABL’s coalition strategy is as yet unknown.

Sky News will bring you all the rest of the action from the Labour Party conference as it continues.
