Labour Party Conference: Day 1
Post Body

The 2017 Labour Party Conference opened yesterday evening with speeches from Labour’s leaders, addressing the party as they near the end of their time in coalition government,

/u/akc8 addressed the crowd of delegates focusing on foreign relations. /u/Kingy_who, the Deputy Leader, followed his leadership colleague, before they both engaged a leadership Q&A.

akc8 used his first conference speech as Labour leader to announce a new initiative in what he described as a “more and more interconnected” world. The scheme, named ‘Global Labour’, looks to fulfil the necessity for “the widest open doors” to “reach new emerging markets” that the Labour leader expressed. Tackling the Brexit vote head on, akc8 made an overture to businesses, telling them “not worry about leaving the EU”, stating that “pursuing the DOHA negotiations and ensuring workers have the freedom to worker [sic] where they want” will ensure “a prosperous future”.

The incumbent Defence Secretary acknowledged the UK’s vote to leave the European Union despite the “best efforts” of the Labour party. akc8 hinted towards the Government’s plan for Brexit, stating that “Left Leave’s plan was given a great mandate”. It is expected that the Left Leave campaign team and manifesto are to be integral to the ABL coalition’s Brexit plan.

Kingy_who used his inaugural Deputy Leader’s speech to echo his leader’s sentiments about a “new direction”, both for the party and the country. In a rallying cry to party members and outsiders alike, the Home Secretary cited his own rise through the ranks as inspiration to new members. By his own admission, in his first year of Labour membership he was “inactive, uninvolved and mostly apathetic”. However, Kingy_who now feels “incredibly privileged”, indicating his pleasure to have had “a close hand on the rudder of both this party and the government”.

Labour’s “long tradition of being welcoming and warm” to its members also received praise from the Deputy Leader. Kingy_who concluded by stating that the current political climate had “given an opportunity for renewal”, finishing with his ambition to take the Labour Party “onwards and upwards”.

The event finished with the opening of questions for the leadership, including both speakers at the conference’s opening day and /u/AlmightyWibble, who is scheduled to make his own speech on the economy tomorrow evening. Answers are expected to be given across the week, whilst elsewhere, two motions were proposed: one to require manifestos for internal elections, and one to give the power of readmission of former members to the leadership.

Tomorrow sees AlmightyWibble’s speech, along with 3 other speeches on the topics of the Environment, Home & Justice, and Health.

Sky News will bring you all the latest from the Labour Conference as it continues.
