Green candidate for Taranaki /u/BHjr132 travelled across the electorate in the Green campaign bus today.

Stop 1: Palmerston North - 9:00-10:00

BHjr132 started the day with a speech to a crowd of supporters in Palmerston North about the Green Party’s education policies and achievements. The campaign released the following excerpts from the speech in a press release following it.

“The Greens are preparing students for the future of work. People going into the workforce in the future will undergo a large number of career changes as technology rapidly changes the workplace and creates professions we can't even imagine today. The Green-led government introduced subsidies for first time students at university as well as four years of retraining for people already in the workforce. We also used our incredibly low debt to GDP ratio to forgive all student loans to help young people get a good start in life. Palmerston North has a large education industry with 11% of people here employed in the sector and it generates over $500 million a year for the local economy. Giving people easier access to university and retraining will boost the local economy.”

After the speech, BHjr132 spoke with people in the crowd and helped campaign volunteers hand out flyers.

Stop 2: Fielding - 10:30-11:00

After a 15 minute drive in the campaign bus to Fielding, BHjr132 stopped for a quick speech to the media and a chat with voters in the town.

“A really interesting fact about Fielding that most people wouldn’t know is that there are no traffic lights and no parking meters in the town. While I’m not advocating this to be introduced on a national scale at this time, it is certainly an interesting part of the city’s infrastructure and transport, and a conversation starter about our transport practices in the modern day so I thought I’d take this opportunity to speak a little about the Green Party’s transport policies.”

“If re-elected one of my main focuses will be pushing for more funding for cycling infrastructure. Especially here in rural New Zealand, our cities are still very car-dominated and are designed with cars in mind. In the 21st century this has to change. The Greens will increase funding for cycling infrastructure so that we can massively expand our cycling networks. This will make cycling a viable alternative that is safe and works, and it will help take cars off the road which will make our cities cleaner and much more liveable.”

“We also plan to implement a ‘freebate’ scheme for all imported vehicles. This will make electric and hybrid vehicles much more affordable by subsiding them and putting a charge on internal combustion engine vehicles. This will go a long way in our ambitious goal of having a fully carbon neutral fleet of vehicles by 2050.”

Stop 3: Whanganui - 12:00-1:30

BHjr132 steps off the campaign bus in her hometown of Whanganui.

After a 50 minute drive, BHjr132 spent an hour and a half in Whanganui, her hometown. She got off the campaign bus to an excited crowd and delivered a short address for the media before riding her bike around the city and helping volunteers letterbox flyers and speak to voters.

“I’m eager to be back here in Whanganui, I don’t get to spend enough time here due to my job! I won’t be delivering a speech here as I will be helping out volunteers hand out pamphlets and stopping for lunch at a local cafe. Any supporters are welcome to join us!”

Stop 4: Hawera - 3:00-4:00

The longest drive between stops of the day was between Whanganui and Hawera, taking an hour and 10 minutes. BHjr132 took the time between the locations to update her social media with some staffers.

BHjr132 delivered a short speech before speaking to voters one-on-one at the small event. “I’m sure you all know of the Whareroa dairy factory just outside of Hawera. It is the largest dairy complex in the world in terms of output which is an impressive feat. This, of course, must remind us of the large environmental impact of dairy production and the steps we can take to reduce that. Agriculture is by far the largest contributor to our national greenhouse gas emissions. The Greens previously in government have funded agricultural research to help reduce the greenhouse gas impact of dairy farming and increase its sustainability. If re-elected, I hope to put reducing agricultural greenhouse gas emissions on the national agenda."

Stop 5: Stratford - 4:45-5:45

The next stop was a 25 minute drive away. BHjr132 spent an hour in the town at a small scale event.

BHjr132 spoke about many local issues including the Stratford Power Station. “Just outside of Stratford is the Stratford Power Station, a large natural gas thermal power station. People in this community work at the power station and industries that are required to operate it. This reminds of us the importance of a just transition for people working in the fossil fuel industry as we transition away from fossil fuels. That’s why the Greens have subsidised up to four years of retraining for people in the workforce to ensure that people who lose their jobs as a result of the transition can get back into the workforce and continue providing for their families.”

Stop 6: New Plymouth - 6:30-8:30

BHjr132 was captured walking to her final campaign event of the day as the sun set on Taranaki.

The drive to New Plymouth took 30 minutes and BHjr132 was greeted by a large media and supporter presence at her event.

“Thank you New Plymouth! What an amazing day this has been. I have gotten to meet so many people across this great electorate. I hope you can put your trust in me to continue representing this community in the next parliament. The Greens have a record of achievement during this term and we are ready to continue to make more progress for New Zealand.”

BHjr132 also spoke about the newly formed Anti-Front Campaign Coalition. “I heard just before the start of this speech that Mr Boomfa would be forming the Anti-Front Campaign Coalition. I have always stood against The Front and have been proud of that. I am definitely joining this campaign started by the Labour leader to ensure The Front do not make it into the next parliament.”

The event was held in a large park and the Leader’s Debate was played live on a large projector after BHjr132’s speech. Green volunteers cooked a sausage sizzle for attendees of the event. There were also vegetarian and vegan options. The food was sold at a small price to cover the costs of the event.
