dyljam Talks to Locals at the Rose Street Bus Station in Whangarei
Post Body

Walking from Morningside and stopping to chat with locals along the way, dyljam heads to the Rose Street Bus Station. Initially only talking to a few people at a time, a larger crowd surrounds him, and so he sets up his milk crate on the small grass area to talk to the group.

"Well this is a bit impromptu, I have to admit. But I'm so glad that you're interested to hear what I have to say."

Before he can continue, one elderly gentleman suggests that dyljam looks quite familiar to him.

"That's right, I was the former MP for Northland. I retired from politics, but I've come back in an attempt to stop National from taking this country down a path of no return. A path of regressive tax policy, reactionary conservatism, and affinity for the rich and general disregard for those who aren't. We cannot allow National to form a majority government."

There are cheers from the group. One woman yells 'I don't want that dolphin fella as my Prime Minister!' Others chuckle.

"I agree with you. I want to see our Labour leader Lieselta as PM. But that isn't going to happen unless we win seats. That's the very reason why I'm running on Northland. And I'm particularly passionate about improving our region's transport."

There are further cheers, and a few people chanting 'Hear, hear!'

"If elected, we will construct new electric rail lines! It's time that our ageing public transport system is improved, so that people actually use it. The current network is in serious decline, and in need of attention. More rail lines going places that people want to go will greatly assist getting more people out of the car and onto a cleaner, less congestible mode of transport."

The crowd applauds and cheers

"And we will fix our freight links. With an increasing population, we must ensure that our transport networks are up to scratch if they are to cope with increased demand. If elected, we will fund new freight railway links and road corridors. We must plan these things now rather than wait until it is too late!"

There is more clapping from the audience. One person shouts 'we need you as our MP!'

"That's very kind of you. I'm just doing what needs to be done. And you know what else needs to be done? We need to fix our housing crisis. We don't want to see the next generation of Kiwis becoming a generation of renters. We want to see the dream of owning your own home realised for more New Zealanders."

More cheers and applause is heard from the crowd

"We are proud of our track record on housing. In the July budget, we increased funding for the building of more state homes. And we will continue to increase the amount of homes which are built every year across New Zealand."

The large group continues to grow as more and more people join, intrigued by what they are hearing. People are purposely missing their buses, in order to hear more of what dyljam has to say

"We will also introduce new programmes to get New Zealanders into their own homes, whether this is state housing, private rental or a place they own. We will ensure that all Kiwis, regardless of their financial situation, is able to get a place of their own, a roof over their head for themselves and their families."

The group, now even larger, applauds and cheers

"I'd also like to speak with you all about Labour's plan for labour. We always have and always will ensure that workers' rights are protected. Hell, it's in our name!"

Chuckles from the crowd

"One of those most vital rights is the right to solidarity strikes. We will protect solidarity strikes. This does not mean that we are anti-business. We will always look to ensure that everyone's interests are served. But we will not sell out workers as National will do if they get the chance. You mustn't let them get that chance! We will block any proposal to strip power away from unions and workers. And we will ensure that our workplace safety laws are the very best."

There is further applause and cheers from the large crowd

"This election, don't give National power! For a more prosperous, a more fairer nation, make sure that you vote Labour!"

dyljam steps down from his milk crate amidst the applause, and begins to speak with locals keen to raise concerns or any queries they may have.
