imnofox appeared on The Project to discuss the Internet Party's maverick campaign and their groundbreaking policies.
Jesse: "Welcome back to The Project, where we're joined by former Prime Minister, candidate for Te Tai Tokerau, and Deputy Leader of the Internet Party imnofox! Welcome to the studio."
imno: "Ah, it's great to be here!"
Kanoa: "Now, you're running a subversive kind of campaign, clearly running mainly against the two traditional parties, Labour and National. You're obviously a fan of neither, so what will you do if elected?"
imno: "I've said it before: red undies, blue undies, same skidmarks. It's pepsi or coke when it comes to your right to privacy. Look, the worst intrusions on our privacy have been passed hand in hand by Labour and National together. To us, they're just as bad and I think a lot of voters can relate. And that's not mentioning the gross political opportunism both parties engage in. When elected, we can work with both Labour and National. Our endorsements of ACT candidates, Green candidates, and Kiwi candidates shows we can easily work across all corners of the political spectrum to deliver on our vision for New Zealand. It's time to do politics differently: we've got to end the partisan bickering. We'll work with anyone."
Jesse: "What do you think about other parties and their electoral alliances?"
imno: "I don't want to dwell too much on the strategical decisions on other parties, but the fact that we're already seeing Labour and National endorsing each other when threatened by strong Internet candidates shows how the two establishment parties will always have each other's backs, and really highlights how they see the Internet Party as a threat to their hegemony. The Internet Party expects much more from our democracy, backing online voting with binding citizens initiated referenda."
Jeremy: "Besides the surveillance and privacy stuff, Internet also backs a UBI, is that right?"
imno: "Yes that's right. With TOP dead and subsumed into the traditional parties of the status quo, we're the only party thinking about how to restructure our economy for it, and the people who work in it, to survive the automation revolution. AI and robots will drastically change the shape and nature of our economy. We need to walk forward into the new digital economy with our eyes wide open, not walking backwards, staring at the past. Our UBI would ensure every citizen would have a minimum income of $320 a week, reducing the impact of technological job losses, and allowing us to streamline and specialise our welfare services."
Jesse: "That's a pretty bold policy."
imno: "We need bold ideas, Jesse. UBI is the kind of policy that cuts across the politcal divide. Internet isn't a left wing party or a right wing party, we're a party of digital freedom. I think our implementation of a UBI would be appealing to all kinds of people, right across the political spectrum."
Kanoa: "You mentioned e-voting before, that's also a bold idea."
imno: "Yup, the Internet Party strongly support phasing in electronic voting, delivering a more engaging and active democracy. We'd start by implementing it for local body elections, with the appropriate investment, before phasing it in before general elections. It'd also be a great platform for parliament to engage with voters, especially by bringing citizens intiated referenda binding and online."
Jeremy: "How would that work for seniors?"
imno: "More and more seniors are coming online every day. We're committed to not only expanding computer computer literacy, privacy, and online safety education to all students, but also making it accessible to adults. That means all New Zealanders will have the necessary skills and abilities to engage in our new digital society."
Kanoa: "There you go Jeremy, you'll be alright see!"
canned laughter
Jesse: "Thanks for joining us, imno. Great to chat again, and good luck on the campaign."
imno: "Thank's for having me!"
