imnofox spoke to an epic conference about RMA reform and said some choice words about a flawed act
"The Greens are the party of RMA reform! No other party is as committed to fixing the RMA as the Greens! This legislation is full of holes, exemptions, amendments, and suchlike that make this legislation insufficient for a lean green society."
"Even personally, I worked hard to get that legislation done last term, even with sign off from cabinet, but alas it was not to be. Nevertheless, I am persistent! That is clear from my long and lengthy career. I am imnofox, I speak for the trees! And do you know what the trees say? The trees say "oh my god, you actual bastards, look what you're doing to us, our home? our living room? seriously!?". That is what they tell me! Could you believe it? I couldn't. But I was enjoying my recreational drugs, legalised in previous terms."
"Do you know what is CRAZY?!? The RMA specifically exempts farmers from needing RMA consents for agricultural land! That makes it very very difficult for local authorities to regulate fertiliser use, regulate water use, regulate runoff, and the like. We know that intensive agriculture is destroying our waterways, and while only Greens have had the balls to do something about it (even when National repealed it in the middle), there is more to be done, and consenting authorities actually need to be able to do their job! That is efficiency!"
"Do you know what else is just RIDICULOUS?! Besides the National Party, yes. Consenting authorities have ZERO obligation to consider past non-compliance with resource consents. That means someone could violate their last 6 resource consents, shovelling shit into rivers or even digging them up, and it have no bearing on whether they get resource consents for future consents. That is awful! If you repeatedly violate these consents, all you get is a slap on the risk from the risk averse Environmental Court- which by the way is a whole nother can of worms, and you are totally eligible for any other resource consents. If you regularly take a dump on the Maccas counter, you will be banned from the store. Why is our natural environment any different?"
"It's also time to finally restore community engagement requirements that National governments have done their best to reduce, ramming through unpopular developments with as little community engagement as possible. It is disgraceful!!"
"Greens will reform the RMA, making it fit for purpose. Other parties just want to make it worse, make it even weaker, greater carve outs. We say no! It is time to take a stand for the land, protect our resources, say no more! THat is all."
