"Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa. Whakawhetai koe mo te haere mai i tenei ra. This afternoon I'd like to talk about what the Labour Party has been doing to help Māori in New Zealand.
"At the last election, all three of the Labour Party, the Green Party and the Māori Party campaigned on making te reo Māori compulsory in our schools. And during the last term, we worked on the Māori Party's private member's bill that will do just that. If we're in government next term, we're committed to seeing it through. Teaching te reo Māori in our schools is an important part of preserving Māori culture in New Zealand.
"The Labour Party are also committed to increasing funding for our schools. We'll extend the $150 offered to schools if they don't ask for a school donation to $200, which will particularly help low income families. The cost of our supposedly 'free education' is a big burden on families. This will give more money back to families who need it.
"Labour's Healthy Homes Bill will ensure that all rental properties in New Zealand are warm, dry and healthy. New Zealanders shouldn't be living in houses that aren't fit for living in - and we're going to do something about it. The state of New Zealand's housing is one of the big things responsible for the cycle of poverty in this country. Kids living in unhealthy homes get sick more often and miss out on education, which puts them behind other students. Fixing our housing will go a long way to ending the cycle of poverty.
"Labour will also subsidise GP visits, so that they're free for under 18s and much cheaper for adults. Thousands of New Zealanders chose not to go to a doctor when they need it because they can't afford it. This is another thing that just reinforces poverty. We can do better.
"For your electorate vote, I encourage you to vote for AnswerMeNow1. AnswerMeNow1 is the only candidate who will consistently fight for Māori."
