Host: "Hi, we're live now with imnofox, the awesome Prime Minister and co-leader of the Green Party, who's busy running a supercellular campaign right across the country right now. How's it going, fam?"
imnofox: "Yeah, well, we're right in the thick of it at the moment. It's a right slog. But, as a Green, cycling from city to city, I'm getting a great work out. Our transport policies may be cutting down on congestion, but every bit counts, you know?"
Host: "Oh yeah, good point. I admit, I drove in to the studio this morning. No! It was an Uber. Actually, what are your thoughts on Uber?"
imnofox: "Well, Uber provides a great service, but there are a few issues with Uber, especially with the way it treats their drivers. Uber seems to treat each driver as their own business, contracting out the Uber service. Basically, Uber doesn't have to take any responsibility, leaving the driver to fend for themselves with little backing of the company when they need it. And then, drivers earn very little and have quite unreliable income, so it's a pretty shitty situation for drivers. There's also the issue of drivers not being properly tested and regulated like our trusty taxi services, but that's another story."
Host: "Right, so what alternative public transport options are you planning to work towards then?"
imnofox: "Well, in many ways, Uber was just a corporatised and backwards 'solution' for public transport, when the problems with public transport are simply due to underfunding. The Greens will deliver light rail networks here in Auckland and in Wellington, providing a great efficient cheap way for commuters to avoid the congestion along our streets and zoom through the city to their destination. For our Christchurch listeners, we want to do a similar thing but with rapid bus transit!"
Host: "That sounds good, but public transport is pretty costly for students like myself. That's why I took an Uber."
imnofox: "We recognise the costs students face, and that's why we'll also introduce free off-peak services and subsided peak services on public transport for full time students, greatly reducing the impact of transport costs on the tight wallets of students."
Host: "Oh, that's pretty lit. But you cycled here. How does that fit in?"
imnofox: "Well, along with that investment in public transport, we're going to invest $1 billion over the next 10 years on new and safe cycling infrastructure, to make cycling a safer, faster, and a more attractive commute choice."
Host: "But how do these other forms of transport reduce congestion? Surely you're taking road space away from cars, causing even more? Why not build more lanes?"
imnofox: "I'm glad you asked. Look, time and time again, it's shown that more roading just increases the number of cars that use it. When there's more roads, more people drive, and the congestion gets no better. Yes, buses and cyclists would use roads. But look at it through simple geometry. How many people fit on a bus or a train carriage? Much more than 20. If all those people drove in a car each, that's at least 50 buses worth of road space wasted, when everyone could be in a bus. With less vehicles on the road, with a more efficient use of space, congestion simply is cut."
Host: "Wow, we're out of time here, but I've learnt a lot. Thanks for your time, have a good cycle!"
imnofox: "Thank you for the interview. Ka kite ano!"
