/u/alpine- spoke today at Massey Uni Palmerston North campus, addressing a crowd of students. She walked towards the stage through explosive applause.
"Thank you for having me, Massey! As you all know, I am alpine-, your local Labour MP and candidate for Waikato-Rangitikei.
"Labour is a party whose roots stem from youth, students, and the working class. We've shown this repeatedly in Government: including abolishing the devil that is charter schools, introducing breakfast and lunch programmes in schools, increasing student allowances, the minimum wage, and the benefit.
Cheers pierced the cold morning air.
"Thank you. Something I would like to share with you today, and something which I know you will all be very passionate about, is our NCEA review policy. If we're returned to Government, we'll conduct a full review into NCEA to investigate its relevancy in the 21st century education sector. This will involve the necessity of Level 1, as well as how proficiently it prepares young adults to enter the workforce or to pursue further study.
Applause emanates from the audience.
"Despite its great flexibility, NCEA continues to be taught in a very similar way throughout the country. Students are overassessed, often attempting over 120 credits in one year. Many students are required to sit in exam halls for 18 hours in two weeks, if not longer. Others feel they are locked into certain subjects, and are burdened in the playyard by 'credits that aren't worth the same as others'. Education should not be a competition, nor an easy ride.
"However you feel about it, I know you all will have burning opinions on it. I too have suffered the pain of NCEA, let me tell you! We'll be looking for student voice, alongside parents, teachers, employers, and qualification providers to gain a full insight into the education sector.
Through screaming applause, alpine- just makes out...
"Our full party manifesto will be out soon. Although my mouth is tied shut, I will loosen the ties to say quickly: We're a party for everyone. No one will be left behind. Everyone will get a chance. New Zealand will continue to provide world class education qualifications and student lifestyle. The same cannot be said for ACT or National.
"Sound good? You know what to do, come Saturday 14th. TWO TICKS LABOUR! Thank you, Massey! Good luck in all your endeavours."
Swarmed by eager students, she signed autographs and took selfies with the crowd.
