/u/forgottomentionpeter finished his by-election campaign at the Eagle Bar on Karangahape Rd in central Auckland. Part of the event was livestreamed on social media.
“Good evening everybody. It’s great to be here with you, with my husband Ollie and with all of you on the internet. We’re here to celebrate a fantastic campaign but before that gets underway I’d just like to do a quick recap of the campaign and to reach out to anyone who’s still undecided.”
“We’ve been out and about all over the city for the last two days spreading the word and talking to lots of people. And the number one thing people have been talking about is transport. It’s not great. It’s getting better, but I think it’s clear that it could be getting better a lot faster. Here on K’ Rd there is construction underway for a cyclepath and expanded footpath.” FTMP moves the camera to show the construction outside “Very soon there’ll also be the city rail link construction beginning just around the corner. I for one will be very glad to have a train station right next to this part of town.”
“But this is only the beginning of our transport revolution. The Greens will work with the council and AT to transform transport in Auckland. This means more trains, light trail, electric buses and more transport options for everyone. We’ll also fully subsidise public transport so that it’s free for everyone.”
“Another big thing is housing. I don’t need to tell you how crazy it is in Auckland. Something has got to change. The Greens are committed to ensuring that everyone has a healthy, warm home to live in. We’ll refund the tax paid by Housing NZ which will make $207 million available for constructing new houses.”
“In New Zealand we’ve got to recognise that renting is a long term solution for many of us. Right now the equation is firmly in favour of landlords. The Greens will strengthen the rights of tenants to make renting a better option for those who need it. We’ll allow tenants to make minor alterations and prohibit blanket “no pet” clauses. We’ll allow local councils to set local warrant of fitness standards and we’ll end no cause evictions. All of this will give more security to tenants and allow them to make their house a home.”
“Another concern that’s been brought up is accessibility around our city. The Greens will work with Auckland Transport to ensure that our transport is as accessible as possible. We’ll require all new buildings to fully comply with disability access requirements and we’ll make it easier for existing buildings to be made more accessible. The Greens will help make Auckland a city for all members of the community. We’ll make it safer and easier for everyone to get around and get things done.”
“And finally I’d just like to thank everyone for their support. This has been a great campaign and none of it would be possible without you. So remember to get out and vote tomorrow, if you haven’t already. Vote for sustainable transport, for affordable housing and for an accessible city. Vote for me, forgottomentionpeter.”
“Now. I believe I have some dancing to do.”
