/u/forgottomentionpeter launched his campaign for the Auckland Central electorate this afternoon in Aotea Square at the heart of the city. He arrived, slightly late, riding a lime scooter down Greys Ave.
“Kia ora, everyone! It’s great to see so many of you here. Let’s get right to it, then. Today I’m launching my campaign to be your local MP. I think you’ll all agree, Auckland’s a fantastic city. We’re a city of many different cultures and many different people. And that’s all especially clear right here in the heart of the city. I love this place and I want to represent it in parliament.”
“I don’t think anyone can deny that the two most pressing issues in Auckland are housing and transport. I was late here just now because of the traffic. In just a couple of years, I’ll be able to catch a train to the new Aotea station, which is under construction right now just over there.” FTMP points over towards Wellesley St where construction of the city rail link is underway “But this is just a glimpse of what Auckland can be. We have the opportunity to build an extensive congestion free network. Whether it’s the train, the tram, the bus or the ferry, you’ll be able to get anywhere in the city.”
“The Greens want to make public transport free for everyone. Public transport belongs to all of us and fully subsidising fares is a small cost to improve access to alternative transport. We’ll help fast track the construction of bus lanes and cycle lanes, which will help us get around faster. The future of Auckland has to be a city where not having a car is a viable option and the Greens will make that happen. Transport is one of the biggest costs for kiwi families, especially in Auckland. An improved public transport system will make getting around the place cheaper and faster for everyone.”
“Undeniably, the greatest issue for everyone in Auckland is housing! The Greens want to make renting a better option for everyone. We believe that if you’re renting, you should be able to make your house a home. This means recognising that renting is a long term solution for people. We’ll allow tenants to make small alterations to their homes, like hanging pictures or securing furniture. We’ll end no cause evictions, because tenants shouldn’t be allowed to be hurfed out for no reason.”
“The population of Auckland is expected to reach two million in the next few decades and we need to be ready for that growth. Auckland’s rapid growth is already putting strain on our infrastructure. We need to ensure that our new infrastructure is sustainable and environmentally friendly.”
“I will be a voice for Auckland Central in parliament who understands Auckland and problems people face. I love this city and I understand this city. I was born here and I’ve lived most of my life here. So vote for me, /u/forgottomentionpeter, to be your MP for Auckland Central.”
