One of the reasons I play mmorpgs is the for the ability to get stronger throughout the entire process of the game. Whether that is putting in all the work to get the highest level I can, or constantly farming areas for my new BiS drop. I like to be able to have goals I can work toward and push my character then compare it to other characters in the same game. Here are a few things that people may hate, but I love in MMORPG's.
Grinding and Boring Quests - Part of MMORPG's is that feeling of progression. Some people state that an mmorpg should be fun from the start and shouldn't feel tedious but I sort of disagree. Part of the mmorpg is emerging yourself into your character and feel like doing these quests or just grinding is actually a sort of training for your character. This way when you reach max level its an achievement, players of the same level understand what you had to do to get there and respect it, and new players are working toward catching up to you.
Gear Based PvP - While I agree there shouldn't be a massive discrepancy where someone uber geared should be able to win a 1v5 without breaking a sweat, I also have to argue that this is not a moba or competitive series. Part of PvP in mmorpgs are a place where you can show off your new shinies and compare your strength against others. Yes, skill should and will play a massive role, but I know personally if a game has "equalized" gear in pvp it is a massive turnoff for me.
Gear Progression - I like to play games very hard and put in a lot of time in them. One thing that recent games have done poorly for me is make end game gear to readily available. There is no worse feeling to me then sitting in a city of an mmorpg and realizing there is really no way I can improve my characters strength. Once my progression of my character is halted, my time in the game stops.
Radomized Gear - I like when gear can "roll" stats. This way if I say get an Orange Greatsword, it might be slightly worse by maybe 5% damage then someone else's Orange Greatsword. This keeps me interested as if I am helping a guild mate with a dungeon, even when I have the items I need from it, its possible for me to obtain minor upgrades.
What are your thoughts on this? Thanks <3
