Been looking around for a good free MMO without a ton of paywalls. I think Neverwinter fits the bill well enough. First the bad:
There are a lot of currencies in this game...Bars, diamonds, gold/silver/bronze. That's ok, but some things you can't buy with bar, but you have to trade in diamonds for bars to buy...in which case...why not just make it cost diamonds? I haven't played a lot (just lvl 11) so I dunno everything about the currency (just been questing and PvPing a bit).
Lockboxes - You pick up some NICE lockboxes that require a special key to unlock. That's cool, except that key is 50,000-200,000 diamonds on the AH. Feels like Tera where you get lockboxes but have to pay real money to get keys, which I could deal with except that I don't think you could sell them, and you pick them up ALL the time. I had 50 rare lockboxes by level 20. Luckily I've only picked up 1 in Neverwinter so I don't mind it so much.
The town seems very difficult to navigate. In other MMOs the main town is straightforward enough to get you where you want to be after going there a couple times, but in Neverwinter I always feel lost in the main city...maybe it's because of how enclosed a lot of the city is. I'm sure this isn't that big of a negative, just something that bothers ME a little.
What I liked.
- Action style combat! I LOVE the action combat style. Makes PvP better imo. It uses D&D 4.0 combat and rules, which I didn't care for on Pen&Paper, but seem to work MUCH better in a MMO. Combat is pretty fluid and each class gets a special action bound to SHIFT. At level 10 each class gets to use a power through TAB (trickster = sneak)
Pretty much everything else is standard MMO stuff. PvP queues and Instance queues. I haven't done an instance yet, but soon...
The best thing about the game that stands out is the ability to create your own quests for other people to play. There's a LOT of quests that are VERY well made as well! I recommend it to those who like action combat MMOs and to those who are looking for a fun MMO.
