As seen here Warning, the elbow popping sound is worse than the visual
Shooto: 1/29/2005 in Korakuen Hall
Well, damn. I'd tried to read into this before but found only a couple sparse threads on sherdog. Officially this was scored a victory for Aoki by standing armlock. Granted, we can all agree the sheer badassitude gets the W, but then why haven't we seen this at least tried in the UFC?
The theories seem to revolve around the fact that this move must be performed fast enough to break the arm, negating any chance of the break-ee tapping before the damage is done. If a fighter is fast spinner, this seems like a relatively easy lock-and-motion to perform. That said, it would require a long line of expendable training partners to hone.
So whats up?
- Does the UFC specifically have a rule against 'quick breaking' submissions, or this one specifically? This would not seem to fall under 'Small joint manipulation'.
- Is it some sort of unwritten rule-of-the-cage that since this is a certain month(s) off for recovery, you don't do this unless a your opponent is a total dick? Like foot stomps to the extreme?
- Is it just too hard to train this move, since every 'success' would come with a hospital bill?
- Is Aoki just a beast, and due to size/speed/muscle mass/magic theres no way a Jon Jones could do this to a Rashad?
- It just, hasn't come up yet bro, but its legal.. chill with the bloodlust, alright?
tl;dr: Snap Crackle Pop Shinya Aokis!
Cue the footstomp apologists:
