Michael Chandler wants a top 5 matchup right off the bat, but many believe he should first prove his worth by taking on a lower ranked lightweight contender. Gregor Gillespie last fought against Kevin Lee at UFC 244 a year ago. At the time of the matchup, Gillespie was ranked #11, Kevin Lee was ranked #10. A fight for top 10 status. Although Lee was victorious, Gregor, currently ranked #14, is still a threat in the division and the Lee KO is his only loss.
Wrestling ≠ MMA, but Gregor is the only guy in the division who has competed with and even defeated Chandler in actual competition. Getting through Gillespie will clearly show that Mike belongs, but it also proves him worthy of a top 5 opponent.
The only downside to this matchup is that it most likely isn't "sexy" enough for Dana to actually book it. It also makes a lot of sense stylistically and story-wise, so that definitely means that it won't happen. Here's to hoping though.🤷♂️
Alternatively, what about Kevin Lee? Possibly a better selling matchup on paper for the promotion, especially with Lee currently ranked #11 and perhaps returning early next year. Still probably not good enough for the goof though...
Realistically I think Dana and the matchmakers have their eyes set on the potential fireworks that would be Chandler v Gaethje. Especially if they're going to make that the co-main to McGregor v Poirier 2 at 257.🤑
Personal opinion, Gaethje v Hooker should be the matchup, but Dana will likely fuck Hooker (no pun intended, seriously) and give the match to Mike because $. Maybe we see Hooker v RDA? Which reminds me, where does Ragin' Al fit into all of this!? Felder v Iaquinta sounds interesting. Who the fuck knows. Just some thoughts...
Side note: In that 2009 wrestling tournament, Justin Gaethje was a participant and lost in the first round. Gillespie placed fourth overall, Chandler placed fifth. The champion? None other than Jordan Burroughs of course.
